United Community Development of North Carolina

Building wealth and economic development through job training, social enterprise, outreach, and advocacy.

Our Programs

One of the powerful strategies employed by UCD is to use in-demand home repair, weatherization services, and social enterprise to provide job training, real living wage jobs, and cooperative community control of the social enterprise to the organizations and the residents we serve as a vital anti-poverty strategy. All profits from our “fee for services contracts” are used to support our charitable work in low-income weatherization and energy efficiency, home repair job training, de-cluttering services, and resident capacity-building in microenterprise.

Weatherization/Repairs

We provide a combination of weatherization and home repair programs to low-income homeowners and renters to help residents save money on their utility bills, improve their living conditions, and reduce the risk of displacement due to rising costs of living.

De-Cluttering

We assist households, particularly those occupied by elderly persons, to remove unwanted items that compromise the quality of their lives by preventing healthy and safety ingress/egress, hygiene, and which compromise the quality of their lives.

Green Infrastructure

We support green infrastructure as an approach to water management that protects, restores, or mimics the natural water cycle. We work to build greenways, plant trees, and restore wetlands, rather than building more costly water treatment plants.

About Us

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for residents in the Southside neighborhood of Asheville, which is marked by poverty, rapid gentrification, and inequitable access to quality public infrastructure. We work to build local resident capacity, improve local infrastructure, and fight the forces of displacement which these improvements might bring. Our organization was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in March 2018, and we have a network of community organizations and individuals all working in concert to achieve our goals.
